The gap between the needs of industry and the priorities of higher education institutions is well documented and yet the problem seems to be getting worse, not better. Industry- particularly technology companies- are aggressively competing for a finite pool of talent (particularly technical skill sets from underrepresented backgrounds) and both academia and nonprofits are figuring out their important roles in addressing how to recruit, teach, mentor, and develop a larger population of underserved communities that are well prepared for early-career roles at top-notch companies.
